approve this message. >>> this is a news 4 news break. >>> good morning, i'm richard jo jordan. we continue to track hurricane sandy as it heads our way. let's go to tom kierein with the latest. >> getting rain bands from the eastern shore to the northern neck of virginia. those are nearly stationary. they're gradually creeping off to the east, get eye few sprinkles around washington and the nearby metro area. temperatures are hovering in the upper 50s to near 60. that's what we'll do the rest of the day. storm team 4 four-day forecast could get showers this afternoon and heavier rains tonight into the monday morning commute and then the strongest winds from sandy likely and the heaviest rains monday evening into tuesday morning. we could have gusts of wind over 60 miles an hour, monday night into tuesday morning. that would be the time that we'll probably have the most tree damage and then after that, still some lingering showers on tuesday but thankfully we'll have decreasing winds by the afternoon and by wednesday morning, maybe a lingering shower and just in time for trick or t

worker in south los angeles. with gang infested housing projects that are now almost mythic, jordan downs and nickerson gardens, and i worked in these projects during what is referred to as the decade of death, when crack and unregulated gun availability laid waste to communities of color. in los angeles during the late 1980's and early 1990's, there were 1000 homicides per year in the city of los angeles, not the county, the city. now, we have between 203 hundred homicides per year. people talk about the gang problem having been addressed. i want to share with you, what i experienced, what i have learned, i am not a typical academic. i will not quote statistics to you or talk about theories. i will talk with you about practicality. pragmatic approaches, and i will talk about reality. san francisco, like los angeles learned, will never saw or deal with its gang problems effectively unless there is true collaboration. i will talk to you about what this looks like and feels like. i will speak to you about the lessons that we have learned as law enforcement had to come off of the high perch,

... >> northern illinois quarterback jordan lynch had quite a day at western michigan. first quarter...he gets the huskies on the board with the beautiful rainbow to tommy lee lewis....from 31 yard out. 7-0 niu. third quarter....its lynch on the ground. he starts to his left... then breaks a tackle and cuts back to his right...for a 20-yard touchdown run. lynch ran for two and passed for four. the huskies stay perfect in the mac: 5-and-0.....48-34 over western michigan. illinois state and head coach brock spack, on the road at the uni-dome vs northern iowa... 4th quarter...redbirds leading and looking for more. quarterback matt brown buys some times with his legs....and finds james o-shaughnessy with nobody in the same area code. a 49-yard touchdown. and isu beats northern iowa 33-21. the redbirds are 7-2. a short week but a good one for the bears. after the monday night win over detroit.....sunday comes around quickly. but they're relatively healthy...... and "rolling," as they welcome the carolina panthers to soldier field tomorrow. jay cutler bounced back from the takedown by ndomakun suh..

this morning. i'm angie gaffe. welcome to news 4 today. >> i'm richard jordan. let's go to tom. >> sandy is a huge hurricane affecting the entire eastern seaboard. you can see right around here, the center of circulation, there's an increased growth now of convectional, increased growth of thunderstorms and you can see this now beginning to really dig deep and develop. out ahead of that, way out of ahead of that, a couple hundred miles, category 1 hurricane with 75 mile per hour wones. as it comes inland as a strong post-tropical area of low pressure coming ashore anywhere between chincoteague and long island, it's a huge area. it could be coming ashore here. it looks like the timing will be after sunset on monday, perhaps around 8:00 p.m. or so, coming ashore then, then moving north of the metro area, slowly into monday night and tuesday morning. we'll have the worst wind and heaviest rain. i'll sort it out for you coming up in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you, tom. we're tenning to track sandy as the storm moves towards the east coast. >> danielle lee is live in cape may,

gaffe. >> and i'm richard jordan. we are live this morning at the pentagon parking lot where runners are about to line up for the marine corps marathon. good morning, tom kierein. >> we've had scattered light rain coming from the first effects of sandy which is still a very large hurricane. it has winds now of about 75 miles an hour. its position is still way off the atlantic seaboard, southeast of north carolina. as a category 1 hurricane maintaining that strength today. it will take a turn during the day on monday. it looks like late on monday, sunset monday to midnight monday, that's when it may be coming ashore from south of ocean city to another point. how much rain and wind? we'll sort it out coming up in a few minutes. back to you. >> tom, thanks. >>> we continue to track sandy as the storm moves towards the east coast. >> danielle lee is live in cape may, new jersey with the latest from there. good morning, danielle. >> good morning, richard and angie. the clock is ticking here in cape may, new jersey. we are under mandatory evacuation orders starting at 4:00 this afternoon.
